This project introduces the classical genre of Vanitas along with the technique of chiaroscuro. As a class we discuss the ideas of impermanence and mortality and objects which may be the symbolic equivalent in the 21st c.. The students each bring personal items to class and collaborate on creating a still life. We then spend two sessions working with compressed charcoal to develop a chiaroscuro effect.
