Gestural landscape

reed pen/brush and ink

mark-making, gestural line quality, foreground/middleground/background

After spending class time together learning the various ways of using a reed pen/brush and walnut ink, the students study Van gogh’s pen and ink sketches. On their own they make sketches at a location of their choice (encouraged to go to the local japanese garden) which they bring to class to work on a developed gesture landscape.

they are to have an object prominently in the foreground and include a distinct middle and background.
